Eyelash extensions generally last through a full growth cycle of your natural eyelashes, which is about four to six weeks. However, because your natural lashes fall out at different stages, you will start to see noticeable gaps before then. To maintain a consistently full look, lash technicians recommend getting light touch-ups (called “fills”) every two to three weeks.
If they are applied correctly by a certified professional and you care for them properly, eyelash extensions will not ruin your natural lashes. Damage usually occurs in two ways: improper application (such as gluing one extension to multiple natural lashes, which disrupts the growth cycle) or poor aftercare (like rubbing your eyes or picking and pulling at the extensions).
One of the biggest perks of lash extensions is that you generally won’t need mascara at all! If you still want to wear eye makeup, you absolutely can, but you must avoid oil-based products and waterproof mascara. Oil breaks down the lash adhesive, causing the extensions to fall out prematurely. If you feel you must use mascara, stick to water-based, extension-safe formulas and apply it only to the tips of the lashes.
